Don’t Forget to Pack a Photographer! | Vacation Travel Photography

Have I mentioned how interested in doing this I am?!?

I would prefer not to actually be packed into your suitcase, but next time you book your dream vacation or weekend getaway, consider hiring a professional photographer (i.e me) to spend a day, two, or even the whole week with you and your family, documenting your journey through the beautiful and wonderful places you go!

Imagine standing at the top of Haleakala in Maui, Hawaii, being wowed by the expansive view of Mt. Cook New Zealand, taming fire and ice in Iceland, tasting some of the world’s finest wines in Napa & Sonoma California, making friends with the towering Redwoods along the Avenue of the Giants, horseback riding the California coast, gazing over panoramic European sea cliffs or taking a trip back in time to rural Ireland, spending relaxing days on the sand or surfing by the beach, or being in total awe of the expansive views throughout the City of San Francisco

Now imaging yourself living these amazing experiences, captured in all of these images through the eyes of a professional photographer; exciting idea isn’t it? Consider that and send me a note next time you start planning your trip. Not only do I have travel advice, but I’d love to be there to capture these timeless moments for you, your new husband or wife (can we say honeymoon?), and/or your family. For more information, read the story recently published on the Wall Street Journal, and see the video embedded below Or link to the video on WSJ here:

To get a sense if we’d be a good fit in working together, you can view my Portfolios here, and I can be reached via email at info {at} nialldavid.com to start discussing your custom vacation photography package. I look forward to hearing from you!

Solo Gallery Show at Whitetail Wine Bar in Guerneville, CA Throughout the Month of May!

I’m excited to announce that Leslie Bahr of Whitetail Wine Bar in Guerneville, CA has invited me to show 11 pieces of my landscape photography in her lovely gallery. It’s a fantastic opportunity that I’m elated over as Russian River wine country  is just entering into the high season and I can’t wait to show my work in print to everyone starting this week and continuing throughout the month of May!

I’ve made ten 16″x24″ fine art prints mounted in archival museum gallery mats and one special 10″x40″ panorama I’m debuting at this show. The photographs range from images made through the window of our apartment in San Francisco overlooking the San Francisco Bay, to my travels throughout the United States, Europe, Iceland and New Zealand.

Of course I trusted none other than my friends at the never less than top notch professional photo lab, PhotoworksSF, to fabricate these prints and mats for me. I stopped by the lab for the pre-matting preview of the prints yesterday and I have never been more excited to see my images on paper.

It all kicks off with a lively First Friday event with guitarist Chris Samler, tasty wines being poured from Whitetail’s owner and proprietor, Leslie Bahr, and of course I’ll be there smiling away as we finish hanging my work and getting everything squared away for this month’s show.

If you’re in the need for a trip to sample some wonderful Russian River wines, please join us this Friday May 4 or anytime throughout the month of May at Whitetail Wine Bar, 16230 Main St. Guerneville, CA.

For more info, see Whitetail Wine Bar’s Facebook page. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Mendocino Wine Country

A little slice of heaven in Mendocino Wine Country. Good to get away for a bit 🙂

Santa Monica Pier and Pacific Park Amusement Park | HDR Images

Spent a little time on the Santa Monica Pier while visiting some friends in Culver City in Los Angeles this summer. I love this pier because not only is a classic boardwalk with a great history, but it’s got the fantastic family amusement park, Pacific Park, right on the pier.

 (Niall David)

Since we hit the place in broad summertime 12-noon sunlight I decided to make 3-7 captures 1-stop apart for each photo I wanted to make as we wandered the pier. There’s so much character in the buildings, structures, art, and people on the pier, it’s hard not to want to photograph all kinds of things going on in front of you. We only had an hour out there, but it was an hour well spent.

I came to really enjoy learning how to use Nik Software‘s HDR Efex Pro a few months ago, and this was the perfect place to make the scenes come alive in ways I otherwise couldn’t have done with traditional digital photography. HDR Efex Pro is my favorite HDR software due to it’s slick interface and ease of intuitive adjustments. I started out using one of the pretty awesome presets the software comes equipped with and then tweaking to my liking, but the more I got familiar with the interface (and HDR photography in general), the more I’d start from scratch and develop the scenes to my liking. My goal is usually realistic, but sometimes it’s really fun to go for vintage, black and white or surreal.

Sunset over the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge

This was one of those sunsets you can’t believe you got to witness and all you have to do is look out the window.

Instagram :: July 2011

Another stellar month with Instagram and my iPhone 4. Lots of travel all up and down the West coast had me swimming with excitement of new places and far away lands of the Western United States. I can say this for sure, if you ever get the chance to drive US Route 1 north of San Francisco to it’s end where it meets the 101, and then up into Oregon, do it!

You can catch up on part of our journey on my previous post here, and I’ve got a host of personal project images made on the July road trips coming your way in August. Stay tuned for more images from landscapes and cityscapes of California the Pacific Northwest.

Instagram :: June 2011

June was a cool month for Instagramming…

I got revived with some true street inspiration this month, and went back to some of my urban/street photography roots. I joined Doctor Popular and Photojojo for an eventful instawalk in San Francisco (#instawalksf) where we rambled all over Chinatown for a few hours. The best part was picking up a fisheye lens for my iPhone and becoming instantly addicted to the thing! I think it’s going to be my new go to tool for keeping iPhone street walks interesting.

My new photo friend, Felix Lim (@fixelzero) and I decided to ramble onwards to downtown and after starting at 11am, ended up photowalking until around 9pm that night… It’s a real treat wandering around and shooting with Felix as we have about 33% overlap in our style and 66% difference on our vision, so we end up with really cool and often completely unique perspectives on the same city block. After covering miles and miles and dozens of those blocks on this instawalk, we came out with some cool complimentary images. Felix goes for people and gestures in place, and is a master of seeking and capturing these great black and white compositions with a person or two in them that just make the image. I tend to stick to grit, details, wide industrial views, and close focus tilt/shift type images of street scenes.

Hoping I can spend one day each month on a walk like this. I really like the idea of using a simple point n shoot camera like the iPhone, getting some snaps, processing them in the phone directly through the Instagram app or other iPhone software like Camera+ or Noir, and keeping it simple. I tend to process on the fly, usually right after shooting the image, and post directly to my feed. The beauty of all this to me is simplicity. The only time these images touch my computer is when they’re getting backed up onto a hard drive, and so I can post the processed images here on my website/blog. It’s refreshing to use such a simple process to deliver images, and anyone can do it. The more people you follow on instagram, the more interesting perspectives you gain from all over the world.

Happy Instagramming!
