Meet La-Yona and Terence, one of the most hilarious and most loving couples I could ever have spent an hour at Alamo Square in San Francisco with!

Morgan, Tom and (Their Golden Retriever) Barkley :) | Couples Portraits

It’s not everyday that I get to photograph a couple and their cute little dog. This was one of those days! We decided to head over to the dog park side of Stern Grove (which Barkley was pretty psyched about!) and rambled around the fields and explored the woodsy area for a while. Morgan and Tom are a great couple and having their pooch around helped to keep everyone laughing and excited through the shoot!

Zack Arias One Light Workshop Comes to San Francisco!

This past weekend I was honored to host as the City Representative for Zack AriasOne Light Workshop here in San Francisco. Repping meant organizing and booking the studio, models, food, catering, supplies and other logistics. Though I understand more now why good planners are well paid for taking care of business, it was more than worth the adventure to become part of the experience at this incredible workshop.

 (Niall David)

If you know anything about me, you know that Zack is one of my icons of photography, so you know I was living on cloud 9 all weekend. He is a sharing photographer – tells all, and keeps it real. Over the past few years, I’ve read most of Zack’s blog posts, seen tons of his videos, spent entire weekends glued to the computer during CreativeLIVE seminars (Studio Lighting and Foundations of a Working Photographer), and practiced many of his techniques on my own shoots as I grow into my own style. Living the experience in person was a treat of epic proportion.

 (Niall David)

The mixer the night before was really cool, and was a great way to meet many of the attendees. I love the idea of the night before meetup as everyone has a chance to share stories and bond before jumping into the 15 hour workshop the next day. There was a great mix of photographers, from dabbling hobbyists to full time pros. Everyone brought a unique sense of being to the workshop and I’m sure everyone took something priceless away in improving their own craft.

 (Niall David)

The morning starts out with a quick rundown of all things photographic, from basic camera stuff like apertures, shutter speeds and ISO (no eyesooooohhhhh!), to more advanced topics like camera to subject distance, inverse square law, flashes & strobes, flash power, mixing ambient and strobes and all that good stuff. Once you get through the obligatory basics, the afternoon into the evening (about 6 hours) is spent shooting with a variety of modifiers with two models. Zack sets up each scenario with a demo that includes a pragmatic way of finding composition and exposure, and then the students take it away.

All in all it’s an experience well worth it and then some. I’d absolutely attend again, and I highly suggest you make it happen next time Zack is in your neck of the woods. You’ll meet cool people, spend some time with a photo ninja, and pick up more skillz than you can handle all in the space of about 24 hours of your time.

Our lovely models for the day were Whitney Nichole and Maya Carina. Thanks to both of you for being so generous with your time and talent!

We Started in the studio with an umbrella and the Westcott 28″ softbox:

And then moved it outside to ramble around the gritty alleys of the Dogpatch…

When it was my turn, I had to make it a point to catch a few of Whitney under the spot 🙂

And then we pulled out “big momma” (the Westcott 50″ softbox):

After the main instructional portion, we broke for a pizza dinner, then split up into 3 teams to go out in the dark on an assignment to “make some cool images of each other.” Fellow workshop attendee and street photographer, Felix Lim, was my subject for the the street image concept I had; one of the last captures I made was of him on the corner of 3rd street right as the MUNI T-Train train conveniently passed by.

A great deal of thanks to Zack and his team (Meghan Arias and Kara Pecknold) for putting together this great workshop. It was cool to meet Zack’s eldest, Caleb, who was a rockin’ assistant throughout the day. Cheers Zack, hope to see you back in SF soon!

“Side Project” Photoshoot

Had a blast at an interesting photoshoot for my friend, music producer Adam Rossi and his bandmate Bob Hopkins at Adam’s studio in San Francisco. They’re working on a new and exciting undercover side project. Two cool guys making really cool music in an equally cool studio. It was pretty awesome to have their deep dark layered and developed tracks blasting in the background while we made some cool photos. One of the most fun and quirky photos I’ve made to date 🙂

I’ll be sure to get the link out to everyone once they launch the record. Rock on dudes.

Singer-Songwriter, Debbie Neigher, Photoshoot at Viracocha

It was a fine time on a photoshoot for images for singer-songwriter, Debbie Neigher, for her album release campaign and soon to be released new website. Debbie is a good friend and was a joy to photograph We had a lot of fun turning her into a very photogenic subject 🙂 The concept for the set was speakeasy piano bar, and the scene at Viracocha SF was perfect for what we were going for!

Take a look at the blog post and photo gallery from the previous project I did with Debbie at Tiny Telephone Recording Studio while she was recording tracks for her upcoming album. TT is a sweet studio, and it was amazing to spend time there during the recording process. Having gotten a little preview of the album while in the studio, and at a little secret preview party at our apartment, I can say I’m really looking forward its release. Keep your eyes and ears peeled!

Whitney Nichole ‘100 Strong’ Album Cover and Promotional Images Photoshoot

The music is recorded, mixed and mastered. The album art is complete, and first run of the CDs has been pressed and delivered.  The album is set to be released January 27, 2011 locally and March 8, 2011 nationally, so it’s time to finally share some of the photos of my beautiful and fabulous girlfriend, Whitney Nichole, we made during the ‘100 Strong’ album photoshoot!

 (Niall David)

Knowing Whitney for three years now, having lived together for almost half that time, and the fact that she’s so damn beautiful made her an easy person to work with 🙂 Though I’ve been chronicling the last two years of her music career photographically, both in live venues and in the recording studio, this was our first portrait shoot together. Lena Chavez joined us to contribute her fabulous makeup artist skills and David Reed brought in the extra touch on Whitney’s hair.

 (Niall David)

The managers at Viracocha in San Francisco were gracious enough to let us rent the space for half a day and were really kind to allowing us the access we needed to get the shots we wanted. If you’re an antique shop buff and are ever in the Mission in SF I highly recommend a visit to Viracocha. Though the shop has been there only a little over a year, you’d think it has been there since the late 20’s and the era of the speakeasy. The place is just so dramatically adorned. Most everything in the shop is for sale and there’s probably not a person alive who wouldn’t find something they wanted there. I’m not a huge shopper, but every time we go there, I’m completely amazed at how well setup and maintained the decor of the shop is. You really feel like you’re taking a step back in time in a wonderful way.

 (Niall David)

It was great having both Lena Chavez and David Reed on hand for makeup and hair. They’re both fantastic at what they do, and it really helped to have them there to keep extra eyes on the scene to fix any things out of place and for last minute touch ups. They were both fantastic to work with!

Graphic design and artwork for the album was done by Mark Sackett, Timo Nagel and the team at Reflectur. It was a great pleasure to have such an experienced graphic design team working on the concept for Whitney’s album. We picked our favorite snapshots from the last two years, and with their amazing talent and keen eyes for fantastic layouts, they covered every inch of the digipack case, booklet and CD with my images from the photoshoot, recording studio and her live performances, so it’s truly 100% Whitney.

 (Niall David)

You’ll probably recognize this one, it’s the one chosen for the cover of the album (click on the image see the full gallery from the shoot):

You can listen to more of Whitney’s beautiful music at whitneynichole.com. If you’re in San Francisco tomorrow night, January 27, come on down to Cafe Du Nord, where you can help us celebrate the Record Release alongside performers Keeley Valentino, Kindness and Lies, and Pebble Theory.
